Path of Exile dives deep: Curse of the Allflame is live

Path of Exile's July update lands today with a new deep-sea challenge league, the Luminary Ascendancy for the Scion, and major reworks to Abyss, Legion, and item sockets.

Path of Exile rolls out its July update with everything on the table: Curse of the Allflame is now live on PC and consoles. Grinding Gear Games didn't ship a simple league pass but a package that reworks several of the game's core systems —Abyss, Legion, item sockets— on top of a brand-new deep-sea challenge league and another Ascendancy for the Scion. In practice, it's the kind of patch that reshapes how you play for months.

The league: setting course for the deep

The challenge league puts you under the command of Valerie, a corsair captain scouring Wraeclast's ocean floor for forgotten treasure. The loop is straightforward: you gather Charts, board the Sovereign, and descend into protected areas using Allflame lanterns. Charts can be chained into Voyages — longer expeditions with stronger rewards for anyone willing to push harder.

The hook for loot hunters sits below deck: the ship's heart can split an item into several ghostly outcomes, and you keep only one. On top of that, Ducats found on the seafloor also alter items. It's a risk-and-decision crafting system baked into the league's fantasy itself, not a minigame bolted on the side.

The Scion gets a new Ascendancy: Luminary

The big build headline is Luminary, the Scion's new Ascendancy, able to keep up to three hired mercenaries at once. It slots perfectly into the other major change: the Mercenaries of Trarthus become permanent core content from Act 3 onward. You defeat them in duels to recruit them as temporary allies, and Luminary turns that mechanic into the backbone of an entire character archetype.

Abyss and Legion, reworked

Abyss ditches the chase-the-cracks-across-the-map loop —one of the mechanic's long-standing complaints—. Enemies now feed an abyssal pit at a fixed spot, with a new pinnacle boss waiting at the end. Legion also gets significant improvements in the package, in the same spirit of making the endgame denser and less scattered.

Sockets, gems, and new loot

The most sweeping change is socket flexibility: gems fit into any slot, and matching colors grants quality bonuses instead of being a hard requirement. On the gear side, there are 15 new uniques and fresh gems, including Pact gems that trade power for attaching Afflictions. Add transfigured skills like Holy Hammers of Spirals (mace, sceptre, or staff) and Reap of Butchery (a physical spell that builds Blood Charges), plus a rework of the Tidebreaker weapon, which now scales elemental damage tied to Brine Charges.

Quality of life

Two tweaks that summoner players and newcomers alike will appreciate. The Animate Guardian finally has its own equipment window and keeps its gear on respawn, closing one of the mechanic's most frustrating risks. And an in-game tooltip system explains mechanics like Brine Charges and Endurance Charges without forcing you out to the wiki.

Availability

Curse of the Allflame is available today, July 24, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S, with the usual free-to-play model. Grinding Gear Games paired the launch with an official YouTube trailer showing off the league's underwater setting. For an ARPG that lives on reinventing its endgame league after league, this drop aims less at the headlines and more at the plumbing: sockets, Abyss, and Legion are systems you touch every day, and that's where we'll see whether the bet paid off.
