WoW Patch 12.1: everything the PTR moved this past week

Tuning for all 13 classes, rewritten tier sets, The Venomous Abyss in testing and more housing: the Curse of Ula'tek PTR moved half a patch in one week. Here's everything build 68629 left behind.

The Patch 12.1 PTR isn't slowing down. Wowhead's weekly recap for build 68629 makes it clear that Curse of Ula'tek has hit the stage where Blizzard touches everything at once: class tuning, tier sets, the first Heroic raid testing, more housing work, and a pile of datamined content with no date attached. If you've been keeping half an eye on Midnight, this is the week the patch started taking its final shape.

Classes and tier sets: nobody got off easy

The heaviest block of the week was balance. After Heroic raid testing, PTR tuning swept through all 13 classes, with nerfs and buffs handed out in roughly equal measure and adjustments aimed at Season 2 rather than the live game. There were dedicated passes for Warlock, Shadow Priest and Survival Hunter, plus a rework of Scalecommander's cooldown reduction for Evoker — one of the hero talent's sore spots since the cycle began.

The tier sets moved as much as the abilities themselves, if not more. Datamined changes include the Affliction 4pc, with Seed of Corruption applying Unstable Affliction at reduced effectiveness; the Retribution 4pc rebuilt around Divine Arbiter; and the Restoration Druid set, which trims the Genesis bonus but stretches its duration. The official development notes for the week of July 14 also brought talent adjustments for Protection Paladin.

And one number that matters more than it looks: Season 2 now lands a 46 item-level jump over Season 1, up from the 39 originally planned. Translation: your current gear ages out faster, but the season starts with a lot more room to climb.

Season 2: Coiled Isle, The Venomous Abyss and Altar of Fangs

The patch's headline content is already walkable on the PTR. Coiled Isle is the new zone — a corrupted ecosystem of poisonous water and venomous wildlife. The raid The Venomous Abyss runs eight bosses and ends on Ula'tek; the Altar of Fangs dungeon arrives with three bosses (Heroic at launch, Mythic+ once the season opens), joined by three new Delves and the Lairs: instanced single-boss encounters sitting halfway between a world boss and a dungeon, with selectable difficulty and groups of 15 to 25. Blizzard's first look is still the cleanest overview of the whole package.

Datamining has already surfaced the endgame achievements: Ahead of the Curve and Cutting Edge: Ula'tek for Heroic and Mythic, plus a Delve batch headlined by Let Me Solo Him: Azta'rec — yes, the Elden Ring joke again — handing out a title and a weapon to anyone who solos the boss inside the first week. My Venomous Nemesis and Purging the Poison also showed up, the latter granting the the Poisonous title.

Housing keeps stacking up

The other half of the patch — the part you don't play in a raid. Blueprints arrive to save and share a house layout, pet beds put your companions on display, four new neighborhood Endeavors land, and houses now scale up to level 12. Artisanal Rooms — prefab rooms you buy — gained plans like the Springtime Westfall Barn and its autumn variant, alongside a dozen new decor pieces: rugs, tiles, hay bundles and platforms.

Mounts and rewards on the radar

Datamined rewards include Caustic Venomfang (skyriding, around 10,000 of the patch currency), Stoneforged Sentinel, Sunflare Driftmoth and The Writhing Brood, a ground mount tied to the boss Zul'jan. Usual caveat: datamining shows intent, not a promise — prices, sources and even whether a reward ships at all can change between builds.

Outside combat: UI, Discord and bots

The social panel got a redesign with search, assignable tags and availability filters — a small change you'll feel every day. On top of that: Discord integration for guilds, arenas against bots for practicing without touching the ladder, and the Dummy Dome, a PTR zone packed with training dummies so you can test rotations without assembling a group.

When does all of this land?

Blizzard still hasn't committed to a date. The lead-in questline has been live since the week of July 7, and the rollout comes in two stages: the patch first (zone, dungeon, Delves, housing, UI), then Season 2 a week later with the raid, ranked PvP and the Mythic+ rotation. The community is pointing at mid-August based on the roughly eight-week cadence, comfortably ahead of BlizzCon on September 12 — a projection, not an announcement.

Until then, everything above is PTR: numbers that will change, set bonuses that will be rewritten, rewards that can vanish without notice. Read it as a map of intent, not as patch notes. Main source: Wowhead, with supporting data from MMO-Champion and the Warcraft Wiki.
