Conqueror's Blade Opens the Three Kingdoms Era: Free DLC Arrives July 24

NetEase's massive-battle MMO launches Three Kingdoms, a free DLC with its own server, 60-plus cities, and an anniversary season running on the official servers.

Conqueror's Blade is diving headfirst into one of the most retold periods in Chinese history. On July 24, Three Kingdoms arrives as a free DLC the studio calls "the largest expansion in our game's history", landing alongside a regular seasonal update on the official servers. MMORPG.com picked up the news this week.

What it actually is β€” and what it isn't

Worth clearing up front, because the announcement caused some confusion: Three Kingdoms is not a standalone game and it does not replace the current Conqueror's Blade. The official developer FAQ calls it "a massive, expansion-level season" β€” DLC content you download on top of what you already have installed.

The design runs on two tracks. On one side, the official servers get the usual seasonal update, themed around the Three Kingdoms. On the other, the Three Kingdoms Scenario Server opens: a separate, time-limited environment with "completely new rules" and a fresh faction system where, in the team's words, "everyone starts on a level playing field". That's the interesting part for anyone who never touched the game β€” a clean reset, with no veterans sitting on seven years of accumulated advantage.

Nothing you earn there evaporates: progress on the scenario server is recorded in your permanent career and, once the season closes, folds back into the main progression system.

Sixty-plus cities and a war that punishes head-on pushes

The map is the headline: a recreation of Eastern Han territory with more than 60 historically inspired cities and passes, built for kingdom-scale territory war. The core formula β€” commanding troops in real time while fighting in third person as your hero β€” stays intact, but the studio insists tactical judgment matters more here than raw power: high-ground control, formations that adapt to the terrain, weather that shifts strategy, and troop morale you have to manage.

"Tactics and teamwork are going to be vital here, both on the battlefield and as you continue and conquer cities and terrain," the team said. And it isn't all swordplay: the season opens lanes for strategic trade, logistics and crafting, for players who'd rather sustain the war effort from behind the lines than stand in the first rank at a wall.

Seventh anniversary: Guan Yu and new units on the regular servers

If you'd rather stay where your years-old account lives, the official servers aren't left empty either. The season adds Three Kingdoms-themed units, a new map built around the figure of Guan Yu, themed events and modes for the game's seventh anniversary, plus the usual bundle of balance passes, system changes and fixes.

Ahead of launch there was a closed playtest for the new legendary units and the redesigned world map, with sign-ups on the dedicated expansion site. Current Battle Pass progress also syncs to the DLC's release, so whatever you're grinding this week won't be wasted. There's an official trailer out there too, if you want a read on the tone before downloading anything.

Why it's worth a look even if you've never played

Conqueror's Blade has always been an odd one out: a medieval war MMO where you don't control a character but an entire army, with sieges involving hundreds of players and a territorial conquest layer that behaves more like a strategy game than a theme park. Its historical problem was the barrier to entry. A free DLC with its own server, new rules and an even start for everyone is exactly the door it was missing β€” and the Three Kingdoms framing, with its own cultural weight and textbook armies, fits almost too neatly.

The fine print matters: the scenario server runs on a season, with a defined beginning and end. So if it tempts you, showing up early matters. Three Kingdoms opens on July 24. Primary source: MMORPG.com.
