Final Fantasy XIV Online
About the game
Final Fantasy XIV Online is an MMORPG with one of the most famous comeback stories in the genre. Its original 2010 launch flopped so badly that Square Enix shut the servers down, put Naoki Yoshida in charge, and rebuilt the game from scratch: in 2013 it returned as A Realm Reborn and has kept growing ever since into one of the most beloved MMOs around. What sets it apart isn't just its scale but how much it leans on story — it's a Final Fantasy you play inside a living world.

A story you can play almost solo
FFXIV's signature is its main scenario (the Main Scenario Quest), a sprawling story with real dramatic swings and characters the community remembers for years. Plenty of people play it almost like a single-player Final Fantasy, moving through the plot at their own pace, even though Eorzea is packed with other adventurers. And one design choice makes it wonderfully convenient: a single character can be every class and job. There's no need to reroll to try tank, healer, or DPS — swap your weapon and you swap your role.
Around that story sits a full MMORPG. If you want a challenge there are dungeons, trials, and high-end raids; if you'd rather take it slow there's fishing, housing, gathering, crafting, and a whole fashion metagame built on the glamour system. It rewards the player who wants to sweat through a boss just as much as the one who wants to decorate a house and go fishing.

What you pay for — and what you don't
FFXIV runs on a buy-to-play plus subscription model. First you buy the base game — the Starter Edition is around USD 20 and includes A Realm Reborn and the earliest expansions, while the Complete Edition bundles everything up to the latest one — and that purchase comes with 30 days of play included. After that there's a monthly subscription, roughly USD 12.99 on the single-character-per-server plan or USD 14.99 for more slots. On top of that sits an optional cosmetics shop (the Mog Station) with mounts, minions, glamour, and account services — none of which you need to actually play.
Before paying anything you can try it through one of the most generous free trials in the business: no time limit, no credit card, and in mid-2026 it was expanded to cover everything up to the Shadowbringers expansion — hundreds of hours of content and a big chunk of the game's most praised storytelling. If you're on the fence, it's the honest way to find out whether it clicks. You can start from the official free trial page.
Where it stands today
The game is fully alive. It runs on its fifth expansion, Dawntrail (July 2024), with a major patch roughly every four months; as of mid-2026 it's on the 7.5x patch series that closes out the bridge story into what comes next. The population is solid and healthy, with data centers across North America, Europe, Japan, and Oceania, and you can play on PC, Mac, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and, more recently, Nintendo Switch 2.
The next big thing is Evercold, the sixth expansion, announced at Fan Festival and due in January 2027. It raises the level cap from 100 to 110, adds two new jobs, and introduces a combat overhaul with Reborn and Evolved modes, plus a raid collaboration with Evangelion. In other words: this isn't an MMO on maintenance mode — it has a clear road ahead.

Who it's for (and who it isn't)
FFXIV is one of the best gateways into the MMORPG genre, especially if you care about story and aren't scared off by a long game. Its critical reception is excellent overall, though it's worth being honest: Dawntrail divided the community more than its predecessors, the base campaign starts slow (you have to push through a fair bit of A Realm Reborn before it takes off), and the buy-to-play plus subscription model isn't for everyone. If none of that stops you, waiting on the other side is one of the richest, most welcoming worlds in the genre.
